One Life - Part 10
Lena's mother was so confident of her new scheme that she decided to make some money out of it. She starting off by 'buying' things that she didn't need and selling them to her neighbours and relatives. She would even sell them at a discount, saying that she had bought them at her daughter's workplace and that she had been given a 'special' discount. Soon, she was taking orders and was doing it like a full time job, leaving Trina to take care of the kids at home. Any departmental store would welcome such a regular customer who would fill her trolley with purchases but somehow her consistency in only paying at the counter manned by Lena, caught the attention of the supervisor. Once, she stood beside Lena while she scanned the items from her mother's trolley. Lena's mother who noticed her presence stopped Lena from scanning the more expensive items, saying that she had taken those by mistakes and didn't want them. She ended up paying only for a handful of stuffs out of the trolley of items. Well, 'the customer is always right' and there was no rule against returning items that a customer didn't want to buy.
The year-end sale was on and Lena's mother headed to Lena's workplace armed with an ever growing shopping list. As usual, after loading her trolley with the stuffs that had been ordered, she proceeded to join the queue at Lena's counter. The place was packed with bargain seekers and to clear the paying queue more quickly, each cashier had an assistant to help pack the purchases while the cashier just needed to concentrate on scanning. The supervisor was at hand to help out too, moving customers to queues which were shorter. When she tried to move Lena's mother to a shorter queue, the latter refused to yield and was left alone.
Soon, it was her turn to pay. As Lena tried to 'miss' scanning certain items, her assistant alerted her to the 'misses' and gave her the items to be scanned again. Realising that she would have to pay the 'real' amount for her purchases, Lena's mother suddenly gave out a loud groan. She claimed to have an acute pain in her tummy and needed to go to the 'Ladies'. She left hastily, without paying, leaving all those bags of purchases behind. Lena was shocked by her action and didn't know what to do. Just as she was about to say that she didn't know the woman, a voice in the crowd said that she should pay for the purchases. It was her neighbour who was in the queue and who had witnessed what happened. Lena couldn't deny knowing the woman in question and unwillingly agreed to pay on her mother's behalf.
Lena was furious with her mother for what she did at her workplace and making her pay for her stuffs. Her mother assured her that she would get her money back once she had delivered the goods. But that was the last time her mother was taking any more orders as she wasn't sure she could use the scheme again since the staff knew of her relationship to Lena. Anyway Lena had decided to quit her job as she didn't want to nor know how to face her colleagues. Somehow she managed to get a new job working as a comestic salesgirl. Other than money, the other love of Lena's was makeup. The new job suited her as not only she got to try on the different makeup, she also didn't have to pay to have her face dolled up. But the best part about it was that her mother wouldn't be there with her scheme since she had to make sure that her sales tallied with her stock.
